Three mechanical engineers founded Theta Concepts GmbH in Rostock in December 2022. With well thought-out concepts, they support local authorities with heating plans and municipal suppliers with transformation processes or feasibility studies on local and district heating.

Theta Concepts – that's Conrad Gierow (34), Raphael Wittenburg (34) and Dr Dorian Holtz (33). The trio of founders are pursuing the goal of "advancing the heating revolution".
"We are mechanical engineers specialising in thermodynamics and energy technology and founded our company in December 2022," says Dorian Holtz, adding: "We act as consultants and concept developers with regard to climate-friendly heat supply for clinics, hotels and energy-intensive industries."
Many years of experience in energy technology
One of Theta Concepts GmbH's core competences is the identification of the techno-economically most sensible types of heat supply in the area under consideration. The aim here is to harmonise energy refurbishment, infrastructure measures and generation and storage technologies on a technical and economic level. Openness to technology and many years of experience in the field of energy technology provide the team with the basis for this. The engineers have previously worked together on various projects.
"Over lunch together, the idea came up that we wanted to set up something of our own. There may not be a right time, but there is a time to start up. The market situation was right and we had a lucky hand with the foundation. After all, the topic of heat planning is still politically topical and a very strongly developing market," reports Conrad Gierow.
"When we chose the name for our company, we combined the Greek letter "theta", the symbol for temperature, and "concepts" to create holistic concepts for heat supply, i.e. an engineering service with concept creation," explains Raphael Wittenburg.
It was immediately clear that the founding trio had decided in favour of the GmbH legal form. However, what delayed their founding process was the opening of the business account. "Even though digitalisation is omnipresent, it's still a paper-based, bureaucratic act in the background," says Raphael Wittenburg with a grin. Business registration, on the other hand, worked quickly. The Rostock engineers created the website and logo themselves.
First place in the nationwide ideas competition
"In the nationwide Inspired Ideas Competition 2022, which is sponsored by the MV Ministry of Economic Affairs, Theta Concepts GmbH achieved first place in the "Researchers & Graduates" category for the Rostock research area. "Although we already have many years of experience in research, contract research and consulting, taking part in the competition was very instructive and helpful for us," says Raphael Wittenburg. "Being able to clearly formulate and present your idea to outsiders helps you to position yourself and define your own business model."
Founder trio is active throughout Germany
More than a year after its foundation, the company can already look back on various projects in the field of heat and transformation planning and is already active throughout Germany. For example, Theta Concepts is currently supporting the municipal heat planning of the city of Leipzig, one of the largest current projects in the field of heat planning. "For us as a trio, it is very important that each individual can cover all areas and stand in for the others and that we can exchange ideas on various projects," emphasises Dorian Holtz.
The founders have their premises in the @work coworking space in Rostock. "We have everything we need in terms of office equipment. This allows us to concentrate on our own core business," says Dorian Holtz. In the long term, he and his colleagues are aiming to set up a company where they can employ people to take on projects and support them with our expertise. The founding trio is currently in the growth phase. "Our orders extend until the end of 2024 and we have already been able to hire two employees. Our task remains to acquire large projects and optimise our website in the area of online marketing," reveals Dorian Holtz.
